Yellowstone National Park, located in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, was the first national park established in the U.S. Yellowstone is unique in that it is home to a massive volcano. In fact, the geysers and hot springs that predominate the area are clear indications of the “active” nature of this region. Visiting Yellowstone is a wonderful adventure for many each year. A vast number of sights await around every curve and hill in the park. Here are three must see attractions if you are planning to visit:
Old Faithful

Old Faithful erupts more frequently than any of the other big geysers. The average time between eruptions is 91 minutes. However, it can vary from 65 to 92 minutes. It was over 100 years ago that it was first noticed to be so consistent. A beautiful visitors’ center and gift shop are nearby to pass the time as you wait for the next eruption. Most eruptions only last one to five minutes but are so massive (100 to 200 feet high) that the experience is not soon forgotten.
Mammoth Hot Springs

At first glance, Mammoth Hot Springs appear as a frozen waterfall. Large terraces abound while being connected by trickling water. The hot acidic water from the thermal aspect below ascends through ancient limestone deposits in the area. As the water dissolves the limestone, it is carried to the surface. When the suspension cools and becomes less acidic at the surface it forms the pools and the cascading features. This area is truly an amazing and dynamic work of art.
Wildlife

While the wildlife is a must see at Yellowstone, it is also a can’t miss. The abundance of animals in the park is famous. Early morning and evening hours are when animals tend to feed. Thus, they are more easily seen during these times. Don’t despair if you are only able to enter the park during midday. You should still be able to view many birds and even some bison. Other notable animals in the park include bears, bighorn sheep, bobcats, coyotes, elk, lynx, moose, mountain lions, and wolves.
Yellowstone National Park provides the visitor with views of nature like no other. It is a historic and natural wonder. If and when you visit Yellowstone, you will realize why over 2 million others go there each and every year.
